Portello Rosso

This is a lovely little Spanish restaurant tucked away in a little lane off Little Bourke Street. I found out about it through a friend and made a mental note to check it out the next time I was in Melbourne town.
I met up with my friend SB, who is a local but had not heard of this place before.

In the menu, there were options to have small individual servings, medium sized dishes to share, Paella which would take about 45 minutes to cook, and the charcuterie which included the imitable Jamon Iberico.

Ultimately, we were very happy with our selection of dishes. The tapas dishes were just delicious!!! We had:

Boquerones - Marinated white anchovies over honeyed goat's cheese, with smoked paprika. SB chose this and I decided to skip it due to my lack of enthusiasm for goat's cheese. I had a sliver of it, without the cheese. It was delicious! SB for sure enjoyed the dish.

Croqueta of calamari, dill and squid ink - we were both pleasantly surprised at the creamy texture of the filling. Loved the fact that it was made all the more interesting because of the squid ink!

Banadarilla - chargrilled skewer of marinated beef, with red pepper and Spanish onion served over smoky eggplant with chipotle and green tomato salsa. The beef was tender and I enjoyed the eggplant. Nice combination.

Chorizo glazed with honey and cherry tomatoes. Very Spanish and loved the glazed honey. It was a nice dish, quite addictive actually.

From the charcuterie, we had the House-smoked duck bresola with sherry caramel and crispy leek. Lovely presentation, and truly yummy! Loved how finely sliced the duck was and it was oh so tender!!!!! The crispy leek was a nice offset to the tender duck.

We ended our Spanish meal with a bowl of Beef and mint meatballs in a chunky tomato salsa. There is nothing negative to say about this dish, it was full of flavour and satisfying.

We skipped dessert and had coffee to end what I will say was a truly satisfying meal, a wonderful find in Melbourne city and a lovely afternoon catching with my good mate SB.

Thank you Portello Rosso for your good service and great food! Keep up the good work!

A refreshing perspective of Spanish food! I am captivated by the duck bresola and churizo glazed with honey and cherry tomatoes. What a gem you have discovered.
