About Me

Food is one of my many joys in life. It is a common bond I share among my friends and family. Combining food and travel makes it all the more interesting. I enjoy going out for a good meal with friends and family. The array of various cuisines and our fantastic array of produce really makes Sydney such a great city to live in. Blogging is my hobby and my posts on restaurant meals I have had are paid for and not gratis. Any gratis provided to me will always be stated beforehand.

Eataly New York

I know! More New York posts! Really? Yes, I have been rather slow with my travel posts and I had decided to scatter them across the months rather than put up post after post of NYC! Sorry to those who would be 'so over' my New York trip by now.

The famous "Flatiron" building just outside Eataly
This post is about the time I spent at Eataly in Dec last year. It was not my first time, admittedly I did give it a whirlwind visit in June 2013 but this time I made an effort to spend a couple of hours here.

And for that, I saw aisles of dried pasta, pasta sauces, fresh pasta, recipe books, chocolates, Italian sweets, salami, prosciutto, and a whole host of Italian small goods, both packaged and freshly served off the counter. Oh and there was cheese, desserts and heaps of Italian bottled drinks. Need I go on?

Katz's Delicatessen (New York City)

So what is the first thing I did after I arrived in New York and checked into the hotel? Well of course, I checked out Katz's Deli. I have heard so much about their Reuben Sandwich and of late their Pastrami Sandwich.

I met up with one of the ladies from the group I am about to join for this New York stint and we headed off for this uniquely American food adventure. She had not heard of Katz's Deli before so I was delighted to be able to share this experience with her.

When we walked in there was a man handing out red ticket stubs to the walk ins. I explained to him we were visitors and new to this and asked him to please explain to us the ticketing system. Thank goodness he was gracious enough to do so. He must be asked that question thousands of times.

So the way it works is we find a table. With the ticket in hand, we queue at the counter we want to order from. There is a section for sandwiches, a section for sides and drinks for example. When your order is served, you present the ticket to the attendee and he will mark the cost on the ticket. You then move on to the next section which you want to place another order and the process continues. As these men and women are serving you, you would typically hand the tip at the section you ordered from.

Note that after you place your order, say at the sandwich section, the man slicing up the pastrami passes you a few slivers of the meat before he starts working on the sandwich. So you get a taste before the actual serving. Cool!

Then with your full tray, you dine at your table. When you are ready to leave, hand your ticket to the cashier who is located just before the exit door. You pay according to what is marked. No extra tips are necessary at that point in time. Easy!

Salt Meats Cheese

I wondered to myself what kind of store would be named Salt Meats Cheese??? On top of that, the store signage was very large and very hard to miss.

It caught my eye as I was parking to have lunch at the Grounds of Alexandria and we made a note to check it out a little later on.

In between our lunch and dessert, we strolled into this large warehouse store. The first thing to catch my eye is a little tasting corner for Jamon, prosciutto and cheese!!!! Wowweee!!! One of my many weaknesses!!! I instantly fell in love with this place.

It was too bad that I had just had lunch. Otherwise I would have sat down and ordered some nice looking Jamon, my very very favourite Prosicutto di San Daniele and some tasty looking cheese. Sigh! Restrain my girl, restrain!

They call this tasting corner the "Gallery of Ham" - yummy smelling, yummy looking delicacies.... :-) It brings back memories of my time in Rome and Sardinia in June last year.

Encasa Deli

Encasa Deli is a relatively new Spanish delicatessen located in the heart of the Sydney CBD. I read about it when it first opened last year via the Good Living Magazine courtesy of the Sydney Morning Herald.

In addition to the deli section, there is a cafe area for people to sit down for a cup of coffee or sample one of their bocadillos. Bocadillos are the Spanish equivalent of the Italian paninis. Their menu range for the bocadillos are quite extensive and looks delicious. I must return here to try them out.

Today my visit was to purchase specific ingredients for my upcoming paella dish. I bought some smoked paprika, saffron threads, some really delicious chorizo and Calasparra rice. It was towards the end of the day so the store was quite empty but they allowed me to take some pictures of which I did quite happily.

If you haven't been to a Spanish deli, I suggest you drop by Encasa Deli. The location in the city makes it very convenient for Sydney siders to visit.
