About Me

Food is one of my many joys in life. It is a common bond I share among my friends and family. Combining food and travel makes it all the more interesting. I enjoy going out for a good meal with friends and family. The array of various cuisines and our fantastic array of produce really makes Sydney such a great city to live in. Blogging is my hobby and my posts on restaurant meals I have had are paid for and not gratis. Any gratis provided to me will always be stated beforehand.

March into Merivale 2014 at Est. (Sydney CBD)

Believe it or not, this is my first time attending a March into Merivale event ever! Why on earth haven't I taken advantage of a $33 meal at a 3 hatted restaurant is beyond my comprehension!

My dear friend CW was the one who suggested we do it and after deciding on a weeknight we met up at Est. for dinner. Having been to Est many moons ago I knew the quality of the food would be great and the service beyond par.

Once again, I was not disappointed. The $33 meal deal includes a main and a drink. The main options were:

1) Palmers Island Mulloway fillet, fennel, tomato, radish, pearl couscous, shellfish sauce.
2) Pan-roasted lamb rib eye, cumin seed spinach, green peas, tahini, chickpea shoots, lemon
3) Glazed beef cheeks, grilled pear, pickled onion, puffed rice, roast celeriac puree.

The 2 wine options were:
a) 2013 Villa Maria Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc
b) 2013 Villa Maria Cellar Selection Pinot Noir

We had the lamb rib eye and the glazed beef cheeks for our mains. Great selections. The beef was so tender it was practically melt-in-your-mouth. The lamb rib eye was apparently very good too, evidenced by a cleaned up plate.

The wine of choice by my 2 friends was the Pinot Noir. I stuck to sparkling water.

We also ordered a bowl of mash. How could we not?

We decided to end our speedy meal with 2 desserts to share.

Warm valrhona manjari chocolate tart, toasted cashew ice cream, caramelised milk.

Feuillantine of raspberries and vanilla delice, raspberry sorbet.

Of the two, my favourite was the feuillantine. It was superb;  it had a delightfully light and flaky pastry with the raspberries reminding me of summer. I found the chocolate tart a little too rich for me but it was definitely decadent! Unfortunately my dessert pics were slightly grainy as the lighting in the restaurant dimmed considerably.

A very pleasant and relaxing evening with a very reasonable cost for a 3 hatted restaurant. Nice! :)

P/S 25/3/2014 - I was incorrect to state est. is 3 hats. As of last September's Good Food Guide Awards, est. was awarded 2 hats. My fingers and toes are crossed that they regain the lost hat later this year!

I always look forward to March into Merivale knowing that I will have a meal at est, because it's just great value for such a classy establishment. Unfortunately est is no longer 3 hats, as it lost a hat last year. I think this is a shame because I think their food is brilliant and deserves that accolade.

Hi Chris, thanks for visiting and for taking time to put your comment! Oops! I didn't even realise est. lost a hat. For some reason I only remembered Marque losing a hat. My bad! :) I will fix my post to reflect it correctly. Thanks for pointing it out. And yes, I agree with you. It is a classy restaurant and deserves better. Let's hope this year GFG rectifies it.
